GOALS:

Biogeography intends to be (1) a high-quality journal for the full diversity of research relevant to the field of biogeography and (2) accessible to all biogeographers. To support these goals
– the journal’s editorial board includes researchers who are leading specialists in their disciplines and and interested to advance a broad range of research in biogeography, and
– the journal is published under a diamond open access model.

Our over-arching goal is to be the high quality journal of choice for biogeography.

OVERVIEW:

Biogeography will publish research ranging from biological work that is geographically situated to geographical work that is biologically relevant. Research must be contextualized relative to the discipline’s concepts, theory, and existing body of knowledge. It may address any place, taxon, time — biogeography is integral to understanding change in the past, present, and future — and should be written for a broad audience. Papers in every area of biogeography, with foundations in any related science — including emerging disciplines and techniques — are welcome, spanning the scales of life from molecular to global. This broad and inclusive remit aims to broaden and deepen our understanding of biogeography globally.

ORIGINS:

This journal was conceived in late 2023 as a consequence of a fundamental disagreement between the academic Editorial Board and the for-profit publishers of the Journal of Biogeography. The publisher was focused on strategies that were increasing profit at the cost of editorial independence, journal quality, and access for all authors and readers. As a consequence, 95% of the editorial board resigned and began to explore alternative models for scientific publishing. The result is Biogeography, a journal owned by academics, published using a diamond Open Access funding model with non-profit open source platform and a non-profit academic press. Launched in August 2025, the journal team is committed to constructive and timely review, to supporting development of the biogeography community, and delivering a high-quality open access venue for your research.
