Biogeography is a diamond (a.k.a. platinum) open access scientific journal, which means it is free to both authors and readers.
How does this work? The entire editorial team volunteers their time, seeing it as part of our service to the community. The owner is a not-for-profit society run by academics, the Free Association of Biogeographers (FAB), partnering to bring you the journal with the Society for Island Biology. The publishing platform we use (OJS) is open-source, provided by developers committed to affordable access and sharing of knowledge via the Public Knowledge Project (PKP). The publisher is a non-profit academic press: Stanford University Press (SUP).
Nonetheless, there are expenses associated with development and management of resources, of the workflow, and of curation of publications in perpetuity. These costs are initially supported during launch of the journal by a grant from the Gates Foundation to SUP+PKP and support from the Lyrasis Open Access Community Investment Program (OACIP) to FAB. All partnerships are listed below. Thank you everyone!
Biogeography is run by an academic editorial board committed to publishing high quality research from around the world.
We believe the editorial and peer-review process should be constructive and rigorous; that the partnership between authors, editors, and reviewers improves manuscripts; that authors and journal alike benefit from putting their best foot forward together.
We also believe that embracing both diamond Open Access and rigorous scholarly review can liberate scientific research from the clutches of large for-profit publishing companies that have exploited and excluded researchers for over a decade, contributed to a decrease in the quality of scientific publications, and accelerated the publish-or-perish culture.
Biogeography thus offers the opportunity to publish quality research, reach the widest possible readership, make a public statement about things you value in journals, and support a #BetterPublishing future for science, all for free.
